How does saxophone concert-pitch transposition work?
For standard E-flat alto saxophone notation, sounding pitch is a major sixth below written pitch; for B-flat tenor, it is a major ninth below. Reverse those directions when preparing a written part from concert pitch. With middle C defined as C4, written C4 corresponds to E-flat3 on alto and B-flat2 on tenor. Work on paper first and ask a qualified teacher or conductor to resolve uncertain parts, registers or notation.
A note can be correct in name and still be in the wrong octave. This guide keeps both pieces of information together. Its examples are original paper exercises, not a performed arrangement or a promise that a passage suits every player. No playing, listening test, breath exercise, equipment sharing or instrument adjustment is required.
What is the difference between written and concert pitch?
Written pitch is the note shown in the instrument's part. Concert pitch identifies the resulting sound independently of that part's transposition. Yamaha's saxophone guide explains the practical distinction: the same written note does not produce the same actual pitch on alto and tenor.
Start by labelling the page, not by changing notes. Is it a concert-pitch melody, an alto part, a tenor part, or a score whose display basis is uncertain? If the music is already prepared for your instrument, applying the conversion again would change its intended pitches.
A useful question for a conductor is: “Is that note name concert pitch or the note written in my part?” It is more precise than asking whether the whole page is “in B-flat.” An instrument's transposition and a piece's key signature describe different things.
Which direction should the notes move?
Use the exact instrument name. The E-flat or B-flat label alone does not specify every octave relationship within the saxophone family. Charles Leinberger's University of Texas at El Paso transposition reference lists alto as sounding a major sixth below its notation and tenor a major ninth below.

A major sixth spans nine semitones. A major ninth is an octave plus a major second: twelve plus two, or fourteen semitones. These are distances, not counts of note letters. Keep the direction next to the interval in your worksheet.
Do not use “up for saxophone” as an all-purpose rule. That describes only the second row. When you are reading an existing saxophone part to identify its sound, use the first row.
How do octave numbers prevent a wrong-register answer?
Here, middle C is C4. The octave number changes at C, so B3 lies immediately below C4. This is the register convention explained in Music Theory for the 21st-Century Classroom. Spellings such as E-flat3 mean the E-flat in octave 3, not three flat signs.
Check the two written-C anchors in the opening answer. Then compare a different source note: written G4 becomes B-flat3 for alto, but F3 for tenor. Those are original calculations using the instrument intervals, not additional transposition rules.
The opposite task starts somewhere else. Concert C4 requires written A4 for alto or D5 for tenor. Writing tenor D4 would produce the right pitch class one octave too low. A chart containing only “C becomes D” cannot detect that error.
Keep the register on every row until the conversion is checked. Removing octave numbers early is a convenience that also removes part of the answer.
Can you work through a short melody on paper?
This original example consists of four quarter notes in one 4/4 measure. The source is explicitly concert pitch: C4, D4, E4, F4. The exercise concerns notation only; it was not played or tested with students.

For the alto row, add the same nine-semitone distance to every source note. For the tenor row, add fourteen. The source's successive intervals are a whole step, a whole step and a half step. Both written versions preserve that sequence.
Check the third event rather than only the easy first note. E4 to C-sharp5 has the required alto distance; E4 to C-natural5 does not. Similarly, the tenor result needs F-sharp5, not F-natural5.
Next reverse the process. Bring each written result back to concert pitch and compare it with its source cell. All four events must return, with the same octave numbers. The rhythm stays four quarter notes; transposing these pitches does not add a beat or change the meter.
Why are letter spelling and accidentals separate checks?
An interval has both a number and a quality, as the Puget Sound text explains in its introduction to intervals. A reliable written conversion checks the destination letter as well as the semitone distance.
For an original accidental example, take concert F-sharp4. The alto result is D-sharp5. Count the ascending letters inclusively: F, G, A, B, C, D. The destination is a sixth, and the accidentals establish the required distance. Writing E-flat5 would use an enharmonic equivalent on an equal-tempered keyboard but would spell a seventh from F.
Enharmonic notes can share a piano key while appearing differently on the staff. That does not make their spellings interchangeable in every passage. Preserve the interval and musical context; ask a teacher about awkward notation instead of respelling individual notes at random.
Check the key signature separately from local accidentals. For example, Yamaha identifies concert F major with written D major for alto and written G major for tenor. That key-level shortcut does not excuse overlooking an accidental within the actual melody.
What should your reusable worksheet contain?
Copy these fields into a private study note or onto separate paper. Use a copy you are authorized to annotate, and leave borrowed or master parts unchanged unless their owner permits marking.

For real ensemble music, add the edition, part name and measure number. Do not replace an official part merely because your worksheet differs from it. A discrepancy could begin with the source label, your interval direction or an edition issue; identify which one before proposing a correction.

What does this worksheet not tell you?
It does not assess whether a note is in tune, whether a register is comfortable, or whether an instrument needs repair. It also does not choose fingerings, prescribe breathing or verify a digital instrument's transposition settings. Keep paper conversion distinct from physical technique.
If a score or device uses an unfamiliar convention, consult its documentation and a qualified teacher. Do not move mouthpiece parts, force keys or alter mechanisms to make a notation calculation appear correct.
